Description of Services Provided

Air Canada offers a number of services to persons with disabilities. The identification of your special needs, at the time of booking, will allow Air Canada to better assist you.

Special services include:

  • Identification of the special needs or medical condition through a special notation on the passenger’s boarding card;
  • Assistance with registration at the check-in counter;
  • Assistance in moving to the boarding area, as well as boarding and deplaning;
  • Assistance in moving to the general public area on arrival or, if in the same terminal, to a representative of another carrier;
  • Stowing and retrieving baggage and mobility aids;
  • Periodic inquiries about the passenger’s needs and attending to them; and
  • Assistance in unwrapping and cutting food, and opening beverages.

At the passenger’s request, Air Canada will:

  • Make periodic inquiries about the passenger’s needs and attend to them;
  • Arrange for the use of the passenger’s own wheelchair until boarding the aircraft and for the delivery of the passenger’s wheelchair at the gate upon arrival;
  • Disassemble and package batteries on their motorized wheelchairs, unpack the batteries and reassemble the wheelchair on arrival;
  • Where space permits, stow the passenger’s manually operated folding wheelchair in the passenger cabin (feature available on certain aircraft only); and
  • Stow the passengers’ small mobility aids or other aids in the cabin.

Air Canada will also:

  • Assist passengers in transferring between mobility aids or onto and from the aircraft seat;
  • Assist passengers in moving to and from the aircraft washroom (except by carrying) with the use of the on-board wheelchair;
  • Arrange for alternate transportation for the passengers’ large mobility aids when travelling on an aircraft with less than 60 seats that cannot accommodate the aid;
  • Escort customers with intellectual disabilities travelling without an attendant to the aircraft door. Air Canada will introduce them to a flight attendant and will escort them to the person responsible for meeting them on arrival; and
  • Provide extra seating free of charge to passengers disabled by obesity or who need to accommodate another disability (Only within Canada when aircraft type and configuration allow).
