Description of Services Provided

British Columbia Residents Fare – Permanent Disability

Discount fares are available for residents of British Columbia who have a permanent disability. This only applies to the passenger fares. To receive the discounted fare, individuals must apply for a BC Ferries Disabled Status Identification Card.

Travelling in a vehicle

When arriving at the terminal, notify the ticket agent that you have limited mobility. Priority parking with elevator access will be granted on a first come first served basis. There are limited spots with direct elevator access, and this varies from one vessel to the next.


There are a limited number of manual wheelchairs at the Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast terminals and onboard the larger vessels. Wheelchairs and assistance must be booked at least 24 hours in advance of travel.

Personal assistance

Passengers who require personal assistance while onboard the vessels are asked to travel with a companion who is able to provide the personal assistance required.

Accessible cabins

Vessels serving the Port Hardy – Prince Rupert and Prince Rupert – Haida Gwaii routes have a limited number of accessible cabins. Passengers who use wheelchairs, or who have a mobility disability can reserve the accessible cabins in advance.


The majority of terminal buildings are equipped with passenger elevators providing public access to all floors of the terminal buildings. Larger vessels are also equipped with passenger elevators providing access to all vehicle and passenger decks.

Passenger areas and cafeterias

Most general passenger areas, including the cafeteria, are designed to be completely accessible to persons with disabilities.

Service animals

Service animals are permitted at all terminals and on-board all vessels. Grass areas are available at most terminals for use of service animals.


All vessels and terminals serving the Swartz Bay, Tsawwassen, Duke Point and Departure Bay routes offer accessible washrooms for persons with disabilities.

Terminal parking

Designated parking for people with disabilities is available next to the entrance of all major terminals. Designated parking is also available in pay-parking areas.

Restrictions and/or Requirements for Use

  • Certain services may require reservations and/or medical documentation. As such, passengers are requested to try to reserve their services at least 48 hours in advance.
  • Passengers who require assistance are advised to arrive at least an hour before departure to ensure that their needs can be met in a timely fashion. Please note that accessible amenities vary from vessel to vessel.
